That OPML coffee mug is way too big and too ugly. No doubt it will be put on a crash diet soon.

I'm trying out Instant Outlining for the first time. More details at: Radio.Outliners.Com : Instant Outliner Beta Notes

This post was made from behind a proxy server at work. If the XML-RPC call to radio.helloWorld works you will see a sensible result below:

<result>
Hello Duncan, you're using your loopback address 127.0.01 on port 5335 in this XML-RPC call!
</result>

Cool! The slight mods I made to system.verbs.builtins.tcp.httpClient seem to have done the trick. The mods (in emphasis) were:

bundle { //see if it's the same machine
	if string.lower (server) == "localhost" or server == "127.0.0.1" {
		flSameMachine = true}
	else {
		try {flSameMachine = tcp.equalNames (server, myAddress)}}; //DW 3/9/98

	if port != user.inetd.config.http.port and port != user.inetd.config.http2.port {
		flSameMachine = false}
	else {
		if not (inetd.isDaemonRunning (@user.inetd.config.http) or inetd.isDaemonRunning (@user.inetd.config.http2)) {
			flSameMachine = false}}}

Please note some of the original comments have been deleted just to keep the pre-formatted column width down.

Update: now behind a proxy: uh-oh! looks like the proxy/firewall is screwing up the XML-RPC call. Hmm!

[Macro error: Poorly formed XML text, we were expecting a tag. (At character #306.)] this is a Big Mind Bomb!

To see why visit http://radio.userland.com/webServicesTutorial

Hmm! Interesting. Auto-URL generation seems to be broken in this post.

There's still something screwy about posting to an FTP'ed category home page and it's calendar equivalent.

For instance, at the time of this posting http://www.cs.strath.ac.uk/~dunc/weblog/2002/02/02.html and http://www.cs.strath.ac.uk/~dunc/weblog/index.html are different. The home page didn't register the change to the 'second test' message - the one before this one.

This is one will/should be posted to both the Home Page, the work category home page, and the calendar (archive) page.

Here goes.

Update: I wonder if it's related to caching in the browser?

A second test. This time just to the Work category.

This is a later edit.

This is a test of the 2nd beta of the upstream driver. Since I don't use FTP to mirror this site but do use FTP to mirror a category, is the passive vs active preference applicable there?

Only one way to find out I guess...

David Coursey in ZDNet News: Will Microsoft pull the plug on Apple? concludes with - "Microsoft should commit to providing all its core functionality and features on a cross-platform basis. That doesn't mean Microsoft needs to create a bunch of new Mac versions of its applications--although that would be nice. Rather, Microsoft should promise that Mac users of .Net and Microsoft's calendars, e-mail, contact managers, Web browsers, media players, instant messaging, media authoring, and other core technologies will have the same functionality as their Windows kin."

Whilst I think that it would be foolhardy for Microsoft not to renew its current commitment to the Mac, I doubt very much that they'll go as far as to make the functionality of the Mac products equivalent to the Windows versions. They will not see it in their interest to do so. In other words, they'll want to differentiate the Windows platform from the Mac platform. No doubt, companies like Intel, AMD, Dell, etc., are bending Microsoft's ear about these differentiators too!

Ah! The 'bug' I mention below is not a bug of course. It's just that each day's home page has a navigation calendar. As soon as a post is made to a new day the calendars on all the day home pages for that month need updated to add the new navigational URL. This is one of the downsides of static web pages.

The only way round this particular feature seems to be to incorporate a Javascript-driven calendar in an externa javascript file so tha the dynamic features of the page are separated from the static content.

Hmm! Looks like the beta upstreamer thinks all the files have been 'touched' and upstreams them all again:

Events Log: "Upstream 20 files: 09.html, 10.html, 11.html, 13.html, 14.html, 15.html, 16.html, 17.html, 18.html, 19.html, 20.html, 21.html, 22.html, 23.html, 25.html, 26.html, 27.html, 28.html, 29.html, 30.html. 12:10:22 AM 165.983"

Mac OS X Hints: Free basic image enhancer for use with iPhoto. [mac.scripting.com]

"I just checked this app out, and it really is a great add on to iPhoto for those who don't already have a nice suite of graphics apps. I definitely fall into that category. I set it up as the double click app for iPhoto and it does a really great job on fixing up many of the less then pristine shots that I have. To top it off it's free too."[Inspirational Technology]
